2 Weeks Before
- Write down every question for your surgeon — bring the list
- Confirm pre-op tests scheduled (bloodwork, EKG if needed)
- Review medication list with surgeon — many require pausing (blood thinners, NSAIDs)
- Stop smoking and minimize alcohol — both slow healing
- Confirm insurance prior auth and get cost estimate in writing
1 Week Before
- Arrange driver to and from surgery (anesthesia means no driving)
- Arrange someone to stay with you first 24 hours
- Stock soft foods, electrolyte drinks, easy meals for 5-7 days
- Fill prescriptions ahead of time so you don't go to pharmacy after surgery
- Set up recovery zone: bed or couch, charger, water, meds, remote, tissues, trash
- Ask employer about FMLA or short-term disability if needed
Day Before
- Confirm fasting time (usually midnight) — even water matters
- Shower with any antimicrobial soap surgeon prescribed
- Pack: ID, insurance card, advance directive, list of meds, phone charger, loose clothes
- Remove nail polish, jewelry, contacts as instructed
Day Of
- Wear loose, easy-on/off clothes
- Bring slip-on shoes — bending may be hard after
- Leave valuables at home
Recovery — First 48 Hours
- Take pain meds on schedule, not when pain spikes
- Walk short distances every few hours — prevents blood clots
- Drink water; expect appetite to be low
- Don't drive, sign legal documents, or operate machinery for 24 hrs after anesthesia
- Watch incision for: spreading redness, warmth, drainage, fever — call surgeon
Recovery — First Week
- Schedule and keep follow-up appointment
- Eat protein and fiber to fight constipation from pain meds
- Sleep is healing — protect 8+ hours
- Resume activity only as cleared by surgeon — not when you feel okay
