Day 1 — Move-In
- Photograph every wall, floor, and existing damage for security deposit
- Test every outlet, light switch, faucet, and toilet
- Locate circuit breaker, water shutoff, and gas shutoff
- Change or rekey locks if landlord allows
- Confirm smoke detector and CO detector batteries
Week 1 — Buy
- Toilet paper, paper towels, trash bags
- Shower curtain, bath mat, 2 towels
- Bed sheets, pillow, blanket — invest a little here
- Plates, bowls, mugs, basic utensils for 4
- One pan, one pot, sharp knife, cutting board
- All-purpose cleaner, dish soap, sponge, broom
- Surge protector and basic tool kit
Utilities & Services
- Set up electricity, gas, internet (call 1 week before move-in if possible)
- Get renters insurance — usually $10-15/month
- Update address with USPS, bank, employer, DMV
- Find nearest grocery store, urgent care, and laundromat
Can Wait
- Couch, TV, dining table — live in the space first
- Decor, art, plants — let the space tell you what it needs
- Fancy kitchen gadgets you used twice at your parents' house
