New Baby — First 8 Weeks

The logistics no one tells first-time parents. Hospital bag through pediatrician.

Hospital Bag

• Insurance card and ID
• Going-home outfit for baby (weather-appropriate)
• Going-home outfit for parent (loose-fitting)
• Phone charger with 6-foot cable
• Snacks and refillable water bottle
• Toiletries including chapstick

Car Seat

• Install car seat 4+ weeks before due date
• Get install inspected by certified tech (free at fire stations)

Home Setup

• Bassinet or crib assembled and tested
• Diapers and wipes stocked (newborn AND size 1)
• Burp cloths, swaddles, sleep sacks washed
• Thermometer, nasal aspirator, infant Tylenol on hand

Admin

• Choose pediatrician; first visit within 3-5 days of discharge
• Add baby to health insurance within 30 days
• Apply for Social Security number (often done at hospital)
• Order birth certificate copies
• Update will / guardianship designation
• File parental leave paperwork with employer

Survival

• Stock freezer with 2 weeks of meals before due date
• Set up meal train with friends/family
• Block off visitor schedule — short visits, not full afternoons
• Identify nearest urgent care and ER pediatrics
