First Hour
- Search your property thoroughly — check under beds, in closets, behind appliances, and inside any boxes or bags
- Alert every household member to stop opening exterior doors until the search is organized
- Post on Nextdoor immediately — include a clear photo, pet's name, color, weight, and last known location
- Post on PawBoost (pawboost.com) — it automatically alerts local rescuers and shelters
- Post on the local Facebook community group and any neighborhood-specific lost pet groups
- Call your local animal control office and provide a description and contact number
- Walk the neighborhood calling your pet's name — bring treats or a favorite squeaky toy
First 24 Hours
- Visit (do not just call) every shelter within a 20-mile radius — animals are often miscategorized or not yet logged online
- File a lost pet report on Petfinder (petfinder.com) and the ASPCA's pet recovery database
- Print 8.5x11 color flyers with a clear photo, pet name, your phone number, and a reward amount — do not list the exact reward amount online
- Post flyers at eye level on utility poles within a 6-block radius of where the pet was last seen
- Leave a worn item of your clothing and your pet's unwashed bed near where they escaped — scent helps them find their way back
- Ask neighbors to check their Ring or Nest camera footage from the time of escape
- Contact local veterinary clinics — someone may have brought in an injured stray
First Week
- Re-visit all shelters every 2 days — stray holds can expire and animals may be moved
- Boost your social media posts with a small paid promotion targeting your ZIP code
- Set up a humane trap baited with your pet's favorite food near the escape point
- Contact local rescue organizations — they often have volunteer search networks
- Check Craigslist 'found pets' listings daily and post in the 'lost pets' section
- Alert your mail carrier and garbage collectors — they cover every street daily
Prevention Next Time
- Microchip your pet and register the chip with HomeAgain (homeagain.com) or 24PetWatch — update your contact info annually
- Buy a GPS collar tag — Whistle and Fi both offer real-time location tracking
- Keep a clear, current photo of each pet on your phone for posting
- Audit all fence gaps and gate latches every spring
