Booking
- Compare the same property on Apple Vacations, Costco Travel, and the resort's direct website — packages including flights are sometimes cheaper than flights alone
- Choose 'swim-out' or ocean-view rooms only if they're a significant upgrade — most all-inclusive rooms are nearly identical in size and amenities
- Read TripAdvisor reviews from the last 90 days only — all-inclusive quality fluctuates with management and seasonal staffing
- Travel in shoulder season (late April or late October for Mexico and Caribbean) for lower prices and smaller crowds without the rainy season risk
What's Included
- Confirm exactly what 'all-inclusive' covers for your booking tier — premium liquor, à la carte restaurants, and water sports equipment are often excluded from base packages
- Ask the resort whether room service is included — at many resorts it costs extra or has limited hours under the base plan
- Check whether specialty restaurants require advance reservations — popular spots fill up; reserve on day one at the guest services desk
Tipping
- Budget $10–$20/day per couple in small bills for tipping — tipping is standard and appreciated despite the 'all-inclusive' label, especially bartenders and housekeeping
- Exchange $100–$150 in local currency before departure or at the airport for tips, taxi rides, and any off-resort purchases
Excursions
- Book excursions through the resort or a licensed outfitter rather than accepting unsolicited offers on the beach — unlicensed operators are a safety and financial risk
- Compare excursion prices with Viator (viator.com) — third-party operators often run the same tours at 30–40% less than the resort desk
Packing
- Most all-inclusive beaches provide lounge chairs, towels, and umbrellas — don't bring beach chairs or towels
- Pack reef-safe sunscreen — many Caribbean and Mexican destinations have banned chemical sunscreens near reefs, and some resorts enforce this policy
Day 1
- Check in early and request your room be ready — most resorts will accommodate same-day early check-in if rooms are clean
- Walk the full resort within the first 2 hours to find the pool bars, beach areas, restaurants, gym, and spa — orientation prevents wasted time all week
