Eligibility
- Confirm you can renew by mail (Form DS-82): undamaged, issued after age 16, within last 15 years, same name or with proof of change
- If not eligible by mail, book in-person appointment at acceptance facility
Photo
- Get 2x2 inch passport photo (Walgreens, CVS, FedEx, or AAA)
- Photo on white background, no glasses, neutral expression
Forms
- Download and complete Form DS-82 from travel.state.gov
- Print single-sided on plain white paper
- Sign and date in black ink only
Documents
- Most recent passport book to mail in
- Certified marriage certificate or court order if name changed
Payment
- Personal check or money order to 'U.S. Department of State'
- Add expedite fee if needed (currently $60 extra)
- Add 1-2 day delivery fee for return shipment
Mailing
- Use trackable mail (Priority Mail Express recommended)
- Save tracking number and a photo of all submitted documents
After Mailing
- Check status weekly at travel.state.gov
- Apply for Global Entry / TSA PreCheck if expired
- Sign new passport in black ink as soon as it arrives
